The course is essentially split into three, a section of the Appalachian trail (AT) that concludes with a slick descent into Weaverton where there's an amazing crowd cheering, then just over a marathon on the crushed gravel and mud of the C&O towpath, followed by 8mi on country roads to Williamsport, where the finish is. In the early years, the event was called the JFK 50-mile "hike. About 80% of the course runs on the unpaved Appalachian Trail and C&O Canal Towpath, with the paved 20% coming at the beginning and end.
